Book of Titus Background:

1.       Written by the Apostle Paul to Titus on Crete

2.       Titus was given the responsibility to ¡§straighten out what was left unfinished in Crete and to appoint elders.¡¨

                 

I.         To deal with the problems, Titus is told by Paul to teach ¡§what is in accord with sound doctrine.¡¨

a.       Paul categorizes duties for various groupings of people

                       i.      Older Women

                     ii.      Younger Women

                   iii.      Older Men

                   iv.      Younger Men

                     v.      Slaves

b.      Older Women must live a reverent lifestyle, and they have a role of teaching younger women

                       i.      Passing the torch from one generation to the next-2 Timothy 2:2

                     ii.      Content of teaching is important-Teach what is Good(Godly Principles)

1.       love husbands and children

2.       be self-controlled

3.       be pure

4.       be busy at home

5.       be kind

6.       be subject to your husbands

                   iii.      May need to sound a warning or give a testimony about how God¡¦s Word proved true in their lives

                   iv.      Must teach through words and example

                     v.      The task is not to be taken lightly

1.       Reason for the task:  ¡§so that no one may malign the word of God.¡¨

2.       Responsibility to bring honor to God¡¦s name

II.                   Everyone must Be Eager to Do Good(v. 14)

a.       Ephesians 2:10- ¡§For we are God¡¦s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.¡¨

b.      Titus 3:1-¡§Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good.¡¨
